Why can't I just start studying?

Everyone says, "Just start studying!" Really? Then why am I still sitting here? My books are open. My pen is ready. The clock keeps ticking… But my mind is already running to the exams. There's so much left! What if I don't finish the syllabus? Maybe I need a better timetable first. One thought becomes another. Then another. Wow… I spend more time thinking about studying… Than actually studying. Another hour quietly disappears. The chapter is still waiting. So am I. What is stopping me?

First, I Understand Myself

Everyone says, "Just start studying!" Really? Then why am I still sitting here? My books are open. My pen is ready. The clock keeps ticking… But my mind is already running to the exams. There's so much left! What if I don't finish the syllabus? Maybe I need a better timetable first. One thought becomes another. Then another. Wow… I spend more time thinking about studying… Than actually studying. Another hour quietly disappears. The chapter is still waiting. So am I. What is stopping me?

Now I See My Pattern

Knowing the problem isn't enough. I also want to know why it keeps happening. Then I notice something. Every time I think about studying… My brain wants to finish the whole mountain. Before taking the first step. Aww… I'm not stuck because studying is hard. I'm stuck because I'm trying to solve tomorrow… Before starting today. No wonder I feel overwhelmed!

Now I Take SMART Actions

Understanding is good. Now it's time to do something different. SMART Action 1 S Open my book and choose one small topic. M Study for 10 minutes. A Yes. Just one topic. R It helps me stop overthinking and start studying. T Start within the next 10 minutes. What if it doesn't work? That's okay. Maybe even one topic feels too big. Let's make it smaller. SMART Action 2 S Read only one paragraph. M Read 5 sentences. A Yes. I can do that. R Starting is more important than finishing. T Finish it in 5 minutes. What if it still doesn't work? No problem. Let's make it the easiest possible step. SMART Action 3 S Read only the first sentence. M Just one sentence. A Yes. Anyone can read one sentence. R One sentence breaks the fear. T Do it right now.

Here's What Changed

Something surprising happens. One sentence becomes one paragraph. One paragraph becomes one page. One page becomes ten minutes. Ten minutes become an hour. Wow… The chapter doesn't become smaller. My fear does. The mountain is still there. But now… I know exactly where to take my next step.

What I Learned

I always believe, "I need motivation before I start." Now I know something different. Action comes before motivation. The first step doesn't have to be big. It just has to be small enough to begin. Because… One small step today is always better than one perfect plan tomorrow.
